Unicorn Birthday Party Ideas: A Complete Planning Guide

A sample unicorn birthday invitation: a child in a flower unicorn headband among pastel clouds and rainbows
In this article

Unicorns are a favourite with lots of children. The appeal is easy to see: sparkle, rainbows and a touch of magic. Best of all, the pastel colours mean decorations look gorgeous without much effort.

The colour palette

Unicorn parties live or die by their colours. Stick to:

  • Main colours: pastel pink, lavender, mint green
  • Accent: gold or iridescent
  • Pop: rainbow touches for contrast

This palette makes everything look coordinated, even if you mix shop-bought and homemade decorations.

Decorations

  • A balloon arch in pastel colours with a few gold metallic balloons mixed in
  • Iridescent tablecloths from a party shop
  • Paper unicorn horns stuck to the wall or door
  • Rainbow streamers, twisted and hung as a backdrop
  • Flower arrangements in pastel colours (real or paper)
  • A "Believe in magic" banner — bought or printed

Activities

Unicorn horn headbands

  • Cut horn shapes from gold or iridescent card in advance
  • Provide plain headbands, tape and decorations (flowers, gems, ribbons)
  • Each child makes their own unicorn horn to wear during the party

Rainbow slime station

  • Make batches of slime in five or six rainbow colours in advance, from a child-safe slime kit
  • Let the children layer the colours in a clear jar
  • Sprinkle in glitter and small star confetti
  • Seal the jars to take home in party bags, and wash hands afterwards

Pin the horn on the unicorn

The classic party game with a twist:

  • Draw or print a large unicorn (with no horn) on a big sheet of card
  • Cut out golden horns with each child's name on
  • Blindfold, spin and stick (sticky tack is kinder than drawing pins)

Magical scavenger hunt

Hide small "magical items" around the party space:

  • Rainbow gems, star wands, glitter tubes, mini unicorn toys
  • Give each child a "magic bag" to collect their treasures

Rainbow food

The food is where unicorn parties really shine:

  • Rainbow fruit platter — strawberries, oranges, pineapple, kiwi, blueberries and grapes (halved lengthways for younger children), arranged in rainbow order
  • Unicorn crispy squares — rice crispy squares drizzled with white chocolate and pastel sprinkles (easier for little ones than popcorn, which is a choking risk)
  • Rainbow sandwiches — layers of coloured cream cheese on white bread, cut into triangles
  • Cloud lemonade — pink lemonade topped with candyfloss that dissolves as the children watch
  • Golden snacks — gold-wrapped chocolates or gold-sprinkled pretzels

Ask parents about allergies before you plan the menu. Our food allergy planning checklist covers what to ask and how to label the food.

The unicorn cake

Options from easiest to most elaborate:

  1. Tray cake with white icing and a rainbow of sprinkles (10 minutes)
  2. Round cake with pastel icing rosettes and a fondant horn on top (30 minutes)
  3. Tiered cake with ombré icing, a gold horn, ears and flowers (order from a bakery)

Any version looks spectacular because the colours do the work.

Planning tip: Describe a unicorn party when you create your Partyolo invite and add your child's photo, and the invitation is made fresh for them, in the colours you mention. Families reply from the link in their browser, then say who's coming, choose food and note any allergies. See our unicorn invitation ideas and wording.

Party bags

  • Their unicorn horn headband (from the craft activity)
  • A rainbow slime jar (from the slime station)
  • A small unicorn toy
  • All packed in an iridescent or pastel gift bag with tissue paper

Timeline

  • 0:00–0:15 — Arrivals, unicorn horn headband craft
  • 0:15–0:35 — Rainbow slime station
  • 0:35–0:50 — Pin the horn on the unicorn, then the scavenger hunt
  • 0:50–1:15 — Rainbow food and unicorn cake
  • 1:15–1:30 — Free play, photos with the decorations
  • 1:30 — Home time, with party bags

The bottom line

Unicorn parties look stunning and are simple to pull off. The pastel palette ties everything together, the activities are craft-based (so tidying up is easy), and the food presentation provides most of the "wow". Plan the rest with our birthday party planning checklist.
