Four- and five-year-olds live in a world where they can be a dinosaur, a princess, a firefighter and a dog, all before lunch. Parties at this age should tap into that imagination.

The good news: they're easy to entertain. The challenge: short activities work best, so plan a rotation rather than one long game.

What makes this age different

Many four- and five-year-olds love pretend play. Typically they:

  • Understand basic rules for games
  • Can follow instructions with two or three steps
  • Love pretending and role play
  • Are making friendships and want to play with others, not only alongside them
  • Still need adult supervision for most activities

So your party should have structured activities with an element of pretend, not only free play.

Top themes for 4–5-year-olds

Dressing-up and role-play themes

  • Royal princess ball — tiaras, a wand-decorating station, "royal" snacks, a dance. See our princess invitation ideas.
  • Superhero academy — capes and masks for every guest, obstacle course "training", villain freeze dance. See our superhero party guide.
  • Pirate adventure — treasure maps, a gold coin hunt, walking the plank (a plank on the ground), pirate hats. See our pirate invitation ideas.
  • Fairy garden — flower crown making, fairy wing decorating, a mushroom-ring scavenger hunt

Activity-based themes

  • Art party — canvas painting, finger painting, bead necklaces, take-home masterpieces
  • Construction zone — toy hard hats, a building-block challenge, sandpit digger play
  • Dance party — freeze dance, limbo, musical statues, glow sticks
  • Circus or funfair — hoopla, face painting, a bubble machine, balloon animals

The activity rotation

Plan three or four activities, each lasting 10–15 minutes:

  1. Arrival activity (0–15 min) — something children can join as they arrive (colouring, building, free play)
  2. Main activity (15–30 min) — the signature activity (treasure hunt, obstacle course, craft)
  3. Group game (30–45 min) — musical chairs, freeze dance, pass the parcel
  4. Food and cake (45–75 min) — eating, singing, candles
  5. Free play and home time (75–90 min) — while parents collect their children

Food tips for this age

  • Familiar food wins. This isn't the time for adventurous catering. Think nuggets, fruit and sandwiches cut into shapes.
  • Individual portions can reduce mess and sharing, though they don't on their own make food suitable for a child with an allergy
  • Ask about allergies first. Check with parents before you plan the menu, and check ingredients with whoever prepares the food. Our food allergy planning checklist covers what to ask.
Planning tip: Families who reply to your Partyolo invite can tick any allergies, and each one shows next to that guest on your party page. Use it to see who to talk to, then check the details with the parent and whoever makes the food.

How many children?

Some parents start from their child's age plus one, but there's no rule. Go by your space, how many adults are helping and what your child enjoys. Our planning checklist has more on setting the guest list.

Party bags that don't end up in the bin

Skip the plastic bags full of sweets. Instead, try:

  • A craft they made at the party (a painted canvas, a decorated crown)
  • A single useful item (play dough, a colouring book, bubbles)
  • A "character certificate" (a superhero training certificate, a royal decree)

The bottom line

At four and five, children are old enough to have a brilliant time but young enough to be impressed by simple things. You don't need to hire a venue or an entertainer. A garden, some costumes and a plan for three activities make a party they'll talk about for weeks.
